Last week Mrs. Sutterfield’s science classes were learning how to graph and read different types of graphs. They constructed an activity counting different amounts of colored construction paper and graphed the results. This activity assisted the students in understanding how to design a bar graph. The students also practiced reading line and circle graphs.

Recently Mrs. Sutterfield’s 7th and 8th grade Science students were learning about the different types of variables in an experiment. Mrs. Sutterfield's project based learning activity was a paper towel absorption lab. The students had to identify the variables and test their hypothesis of which brand of paper towels would soak up the most liquid.

Recently Mrs. Wise's sixth grade Science classes really enjoyed her "Saving Fred" challenge. This project based learning activity allowed the students to use applied problem solving. Fred had to be saved using only four paper clips. Students created a flowchart to show the sequence of operations to save Fred. They used detailed pictures, labeled major parts within their diagram and included a written description of each diagram.

Roland Middle School has implemented an academic advisory hour this year to help improve student learning gaps in Math and Reading. This is a pilot study at Roland Schools that places students on a learning path determined by a diagnostic test taken by each student at the beginning of the school year. Students work daily on their individualized learning path and progress through the program earning badges and trophies as they complete academic standards. The following students were the top achievers in each grade for the week of September 4th - September 8th.
